Painting with Light Modern Christian Sacred Art Technique

September 14, 2008 · 4 Comments

“In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.  He was in the beginning with God.  All things were made through Him, and without Him nothing was made that was made. In Him was life, and the life was the light of men.  And the light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not comprehend it.

There was a man sent from God, whose name was John.  This man came for a witness, to bear witness of the Light, that all through him might believe.  He was not that Light, but was sent to bear witness of that Light.  That was the true Light which gives light to every man coming into the world.

He was in the world, and the world was made through Him, and the world did not know Him.  He came to His own, and His own did not receive Him.  But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, to those who believe in His name:  who were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God.”;   John 1-6  (New King James Version)

The Painting with Light Technique

I developed the Painting with Light technique over the past couple of years. You’ve probably noticed that scripture inspires much of my work. I began reading the Bible every day way back in the 1990’s and thankfully it is a habit that just grew and grew.

When I come across a verse that speaks to me I can’t help but try to incorporate it into my daily artwork. It is one thing to create a painting that is inspired by a memorable verse, it is quite another thing to try and incorporate the words of a verse into a work. Perhaps the bigger challenge was to incorporate the verse into a painting that actually looked like art!

Being a “techie”; I fumbled around with various software and hardware until I was able to develop the Painting with Light technique. The process first analyzes the original art work, and then literally uses the words of the selected verse as a brush to paint the canvas. The brush colorizes each letter and word of the verse and digitally ”paints” it in overlapping copies millions of times across the canvas. Some paintings take up to two full days of Light Painting before the picture has been entirely painted by the verse.

From a distance the work looks like it was painted with beautiful strokes of pigment and light, much like a Seurat painting. Up close upon examination however the overlapping words of the verses reveal an exciting and unexpected new dimension to behold.

The final result is a picture that perhaps God first used to catch your eye, and then used to touch and encourage your heart.
